Substance Abuse in the Workplace

Universal Staffing Inc. has vital interests in ensuring a safe, healthy and efficient working environment for our employees, their co-workers and the customers we serve. Using or possessing alcohol or other intoxicating drugs in the workplace presents a danger to everyone.

All jobs are safety sensitive, therefore, the Substance Abuse Policy applies to all our Employees and for these reasons, we have established, as a condition of employment and continued employment with the company, the following intoxicants in the workplace policy:

  • Controlled substances, illegal substances of beverages of an intoxicating nature are prohibited in all work placement sites due to safety regulations
  • All Universal Staffing Inc. employees are prohibited from reporting to work or working while under the influence of alcohol and/or other drugs that adversely affect the employee's ability to safely perform his or her job duties.
  • Universal Staffing Inc. does not engage in random and/or pre-accident drug testing of employees upon hire. Employee substance abuse problems will be identified by issues with behaviour and measures of performance only unless work placement has a policy for testing in effect. (Conditions may apply).
  • Employees are prohibited from reporting for duty or remaining on duty with any alcohol or any other intoxicants in the systems. Employees are further prohibited from consuming alcohol or other intoxicants during working hours, including meal and break periods.

Universal Staffing Inc. understands that there is a difference between substance use and substance abuse, and that use isn't necessarily abuse. Employees are free to make their own lifestyle choices when not in the work place or otherwise on company time. However, such choices must not be allowed to interfere with job performance. if it is determined that an employee is hindered in their ability to perform their job duties due to being under a substance, they will be subject to discipline of varying degrees.

Failure to comply with the foregoing substance abuse policy may result in disciplinary action, up to and including discharge.

A Workplace vehicle is a vehicle used by an employer or employee to conduct any type of work in an enclosed workplace. Similar to no smoking inside an office building, smoking is prohibited in the workplace vehicles, 24 hours a day/7 days a week, before or after work hours and whether there are no passengers. Ashtrays, or equivalent, are NOT to be utilized for smoking purposes.

Non-Driver positions are prohibited from smoking in or on all work place vehicles as well as per company policy. This includes: Loader / Thrower positions.
