Heavy Equipment Operator

We are seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of excavators and other heavy equipment at compost facilities and off-site locations. This role requires expertise in operating a variety of machinery, including excavators, front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, and related equipment. A commitment to safety and equipment maintenance is critical to this position.

This is not on a bus route; you must have your own transportation

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate excavators, horizontal grinders, screening plants, and other heavy equipment as required.
  • Load materials into walking floor trailers at off-site locations.
  • Perform demolition work when required.
  • Operate equipment on various surfaces and in changing site conditions.
  • Travel and work at off-site locations for extended periods when necessary.
  • Perform general labour duties to support site operations.
  • Sort materials using a magnet and remove metal from piles using an excavator.
  • Screen topsoil and compost materials.
  • Manoeuvre equipment into loading and unloading positions following signals from ground crew.
  • Complete all required documentation, including daily logs, delivery receipts, vehicle inspections, and hours-of-service records.
  • Clean, lubricate, and perform minor maintenance on equipment.
  • Conduct pre-operation equipment inspections to ensure mechanical, safety, and emergency systems are functioning properly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Certification through Skilled Trades Ontario is an asset.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as a Heavy Equipment or Excavator Operator (excavator and loader experience preferred).
  • Ability and willingness to work at out-of-town locations (accommodation and per diem provided).
  • Strong knowledge of equipment operation, maintenance, and storage practices.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • AZ license is an asset.
  • High level of personal integrity and professionalism.
  • Ability to remain composed and professional in high-pressure situations.
  • Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment.

Working Conditions:

  • Regular hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Reports directly to the Operations Manager.
  • Saturday work may be required based on operational needs.
  • Overtime available and paid after 44 hours per week.
  • Frequent travel to off-site locations is required (accommodation, meals, and per diem provided for overnight stays).
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Required use of personal protective equipment (steel-toed safety boots required; additional PPE provided).
  • Exposure to typical worksite hazards, including dust, noise, odours, and varying weather conditions.
  • Work performed both indoors and outdoors in construction and industrial environments.
